About EGMO

The European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) is the premier international mathematics competition dedicated exclusively to young women. Inspired by the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), EGMO was created to address the significant gender gap in mathematical competitions and to encourage more girls to pursue mathematics at the highest level.

History

EGMO was founded in 2012, with the first edition held in Cambridge, United Kingdom, welcoming 19 participating countries. The competition was established in recognition of the fact that women were dramatically underrepresented in international mathematical olympiads — at the IMO, female contestants typically account for only 10–15% of participants. Since its founding, EGMO has grown into one of the most prestigious international mathematics competitions in the world. Today, it welcomes approximately 60 countries and 250 contestants, making it by far the largest international mathematical olympiad dedicated to young women.

How it works

Each participating country sends a team of up to four female contestants, who are typically secondary school students. The competition consists of two contest papers, held on two consecutive days. Each paper contains three problems, and contestants are given four and a half hours to solve them. The problems span various areas of mathematics, including algebra, combinatorics, geometry, and number theory.

Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded based on individual scores. Approximately half of the contestants receive a medal, with the ratio of gold to silver to bronze medals being approximately 1:2:3. Honourable mentions are awarded to non-medallists who achieve a perfect score on at least one problem.

The spirit of EGMO

EGMO is far more than a mathematics competition. It is a celebration of young women's talent and potential in mathematics. The event brings together brilliant young minds from across the globe, fostering international friendships and a sense of community. Alongside the contest days, participants enjoy excursions, cultural activities, and social events in the host city.

EGMO serves as a powerful reminder that mathematical talent knows no gender. Many EGMO alumni have gone on to distinguish themselves in mathematics and related fields at the university level and beyond.
